September 10, 2001 Comments from Scott Blacksher (Zokar in MOTAZ) plus a link to photos
from his collection:
"I've been videotaping documentary footage concerning the making of Ted's current movie
project. This will be my busy week in front of the camera. I'm portraying Malvira's
(Tura Satana) henchman Zokar. He's a human rottweiler who has been beaten and trained
to do Malvira's dirty work. Zokar's intellectual and emotional levels are that of an
animal. He dislikes Malvira and hates mankind in general.

Zokar isn't really evil, but he is incredibly dangerous! The slightest provocation can
trigger instantaneous violence. Imagine a junkyard dog who hasn't been feed in a few
days. Now multiple that threat tenfold and you'll see that Zokar is as deadly as any
Astro-Zombie."

splatter.JPG (35647 bytes)  September 9, 2001 David "The Real Spaltter" White's comments: Cool picture of me in action. Things are going great! Man, I'm tired, though. It's tough working two jobs. I did take a couple days off this past weekend to go camping in Utah with my family. I came back with a cold! Jeez! Brinke is trying to be friendly, but I can't let her get too close, so she won't catch my cold. I'm sure she understands.

We did my first bullet hits today on an AZ. I used the compressed air method, with homemade "seal-a-meal" blood (zombie-ooze) bags. Of two hits on the AZ, the first didn't really spray/squirt/ooze out the pre-scored shirt hole very well, but the second looked pretty cool and fairly realistic. I think I know how to make them more consistent now. I
may try "Morbidfilm's" suggestion of foregoing any kind of propellant like squibs or compressed air, and just using the syringes with tubing. I wish I had more time to experiment. Oh well.

The tire iron gag went PERFECTLY! Better than I ever imagined. You may remember Rob Ruckus from the night
you were whacked; in fact I think he was the AZ who whacked you and Noelle. He's got the raspy voice and the cool horror star tattoos. Well, anyway, he played a mechanic type who was repairing a tire on a trailer that coincidentally happened to be flat right at the location we were shooting. We had Terry as an AZ start whacking on Rob's buddy, known only as "The Gooch." Rob's character was, of course, upset over a zombie hacking at his buddy, so he took the tire iron and whacked the AZ in the back of the head and shoulders. This proving ineffective, Rob turned the tire iron around, and jammed the pointed end completely through the back of the AZ, coming out its chest. The retractable tire iron I made worked great, and ooze splashed out just right. Rob was amazing as the pissed off (and eventually dead) mechanic. Just judging from his acting, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a P.O'ed Rob Ruckus. Heeheehee. Wait until you see that scene. The crew even clapped when the ooze squirted out of the AZ's back. I was sooooo proud.

Monday and Tuesday are going to be killers. We have to shoot ALL the scenes with both Brinke and Tura then. I hope I can get into Savinichat www.savini.com Friday night to let y'all know how things are going. If you're in on
Monday, tell everyone I said Hi. Oh yeah, Ari Richards is here until Thursday. We're going to see Reverend Horton Heat tomorrow night at the House of Blues.

I've gotta finally get some sleep.

Take Care!

September 8, 2001: We've been moving through this thing like you wouldn't believe. We're still at least a couple of days ahead of schedule, and I think we'll probably stay ahead until the end. Brinke is here now, of course, and Tura arrives Sunday night. Monday will be the longest toughest day of the shoot, as it is the only full day we have both Brinke and Tura.  Bill Carter

This begins the special section by Jay Gowey. Jay is the creator of the Astro-Zombie masks, Head of Dr. DeMarco, Evil Zekith mask and hands, and Gorilla Arm.

Astro-Zombie Mask

    howaz1.jpg (53901 bytes)     howaz2.jpg (37000 bytes)     howaz3.jpg (37786 bytes)     howaz4.jpg (27917 bytes)     howaz5.jpg (56059 bytes)
    howaz6.jpg (51669 bytes)     howaz7.jpg (46120 bytes)     howaz8.jpg (34590 bytes)     howaz9.jpg (39452 bytes)     howaz10.jpg (58967 bytes)
Astro Men: I was first asked by Dennis L. Phelps for a mask maker (knowing I knew a few) for MOTAZ. When they couldn't take the assignment I sculpted my first "Astro-Man".He wasn't at all like the "classic Astro-Man" but, a rotting corpse with a mask bolted on the face. I was contacted by friends and fans pleading with me to use the "classic Astro- Man" and after getting more pictures I agreed with them. My masks were sculpted more form fitting and skin tight. I wanted them to be able to move their heads more. I used plastilina clay and a toy helmet to build up my sculpture over the lifemask of Keir Dullea (Dave Bowman in 2001).Once my design for "Astro-Man 2001" was finished I built up a
dividing wall of clay (I made it a 2 piece mold so, I could remove the lifemask and toy helmet and then sealed it into a 1 piece mold). With time running out the eyes needed attention. There was no time to find 12 sets of cheap sun glasses with bubble lenses, so the actors would have to see through well hidden slots. Ted was worried about the human mouths showing like in the "classic" look. I took some cloth painters hoods from the paint store and dyed them black. When worn under the "Astro-Man" mask it covered the mouth completly. I used some fancy braided cord for the jumper wires on the sides of their heads. The best trick was I cast the masks in the pale green color by tinting the latex with regular liquid paint tints. Now each mask was only minimally painted and shadowed with a coat of gloss black fingernail polish for the eyes. After my prototype was ready I took it to the studio for some shots. By this time all 12 "Astro Men" were ready to ship to Nevada for use in the feature. After one last glance off they went to TVM Studios. Little did I know that I would once again wear an "Astro Man" mask during the shoot this time!......... Jay Gowey

Head of Dr. DeMarco

        howjc5.jpg (41669 bytes)         howjc6.jpg (40084 bytes)         howjc7.jpg (37764 bytes)         howjc8.jpg (38048 bytes)
Another challenge came when Dennis and I were chatting online. As prop collecting historians we thought it would be fun to put some classic props in the set dressing. This evolved into hanging up "Dr. DeMarco" (John Carradine's) lifemask. Then as things turned and twisted during our chat we thought of putting "DeMarcos" head in a pickle jar as a grisly souvenir from the Astro-Zombies. When the lifemask arrived their was no way it was going to sink in a pickle jar. I
thought up having him in a "stasis collar" and having a talking character kept alive all these years because he knew the secrets of creating "Astro Men"! I took the resin lifemask and made a latex and gauze back of the head on a Styrofoam wig block. I removed the latex and glued and filled the seam to the lifemask of "DeMarco". I used tissue paper to to make my new skin appear to match the lifemask skin. I added castings of "Billy Mumys" (Lost in Space) ears to finish him off. He was painted shadowed and haired. His "stasis collar" was being made along side the head. Bits and pieces of electronic devices were added to a cardboard ring giving him ears, eyes, voice and respirator. A light with a telegraph switch was added to indicate when DeMarco speaks. With Robert Taylor supplying the voice, "DeMarco" was ready! Tura Satana,  being one of the only surviving stars of the original feature comes back too in a "Reunion Beyond the Grave"!!!!!!!! Lets see You beat that Ed Wood........................ Jay Gowey.

Gorilla Arm

                               howgorilla1.jpg (37890 bytes)                                   howgorilla2.jpg (67681 bytes)
"Zekith" and the other props were the last of my duties. I bought gardening gloves and some fake fur and made a gorilla arm for a transplant performed on an "Astro Man". I cheated by making  only a middle finger mold then cut down the
castings for the other fingers!................... Jay Gowey

Machetes

              howmachete1.jpg (27927 bytes)               howmachete2.jpg (43350 bytes)                 howmachete3.jpg (44846 bytes)
The machettes proved tough. I have few tools and needed 14 machetes!  Dennis mailed me a tracing of the only remaining machete from Astro-Zombies. I cut out a prototype and four more wood machettes. Two for close up "Astro Men" and two with wound cut outs (a throat slicer and a head chopper) for effects scenes. Imade the remaining machetes out of foam board for the background "Astro-Men"..... Jay Gowey

Zekith

                               zek1.jpg (14269 bytes)                                  zek2.jpg (6911 bytes)
"Zekith" was intended as a make up. The original style didn't show a burned evil "Zekith" It was a more human forehead appliance. I took a day and created a new mask with a movable mouth and had the one eyed burnt alien done. At the last minute I was able to make some hands and supply a make up kit. This was the last batch of items to be made. I was glad my work was over ...for now. There is a whole crop of ideas floating around as this feature is still shooting...... "Squads of Dolls" "Little Green Men" and more "Astro Men" are just the begining!!!
Time to Grind the Cat Food...

September 7, 2001 Things are going quite well here. We're a couple of days ahead of schedule, and have a good chance of staying ahead through the end. Brinke is in, and she is great. Tura arrives Sunday night. We've done a couple of large AZ groups, with lots of blood. I don't think the fans will be disappointed. Bill Carter

Ted V. Mikels: Brinke worked today, she was great. Shooting as always well ahead of schedule and GREAT STUFF.

July 21, 2001: Carradine needs a hair trim before he is done. Got more silver paint for the machetes too (of course I ran out before they were done!).

Robert Taylor's possible dialog for the head of John Carradine July 18, 2001: DO YOU THINK I HAVE TOLD YOU ALL I KNOW?  YOUR PITIFUL MENTALITY COULDN'T BEGIN TO COMPREHEND THE INTRICACIES....THE UNFATHOMABLE DEPTHS...OF MY KNOWLEDGE!  WOULD YOU EXPECT ME TO TELL YOU EVERYTHING?  I MIGHT AS WELL TRY TO TEACH MOZART TO A WOMBAT!  OR EXPLAIN RELATIVITY TO A GOPHER! (Carradine here starts to chuckle, as he's amused himself with these comparisons...he chuckles on....) TEACH A CABBAGE TO DANCE!!!!!

I don't know Tura's reaction to this yet....maybe she would unplug the speaker wire from his collar in mid-chuckle.  Robert

Robert Taylor July 17, 2001: YOU DID ME A FAVOR, DESTROYING MY BODY!  YOU LIBERATED ME FROM THAT FRAGILE EARTHLY PRISON OF FLESH AND BONE AND PERMITTED ME TO BECOME WHAT I AM TODAY...PURE INTELLECT, A SELF CONTAINED ZONE OF BOUNDLESS KNOWLEDGE.  MY MIND RANGES FREE IN THE UNIVERSE, FLYING FAR BEYOND ANY OF THE CONSTRAINTS THAT LIMIT YOUR PUNY BRAIN!
(Tura responds, picking up the head of John Carradine...."I'll send you flying, you preserved
                  human vegetable!")

              collar1.jpg (6069 bytes)                collar2.jpg (6393 bytes)               collar3.jpg (23480 bytes)
July 16, 2001: Jay completes John Carradine's collar. Here are some details: I put a respirator on the back, speaker and lense on the front, attached wires in his ears and to his throat, and hearing microphones on each side.
A telegraph micro switch will make the light blink when he talks. The collar has some cool holographic decals that look great in bright light.

Robert Taylor will be the voice of John Carradine. He wrote the following dialog awaiting Ted's approval:

Did Dr. Demarco have a first name? I'm using the name Septimus in the following line... Mind you, these are just some fun lines I've been saying. Don't know if they'll fit the final version:

ONLY I, SEPTIMUS DEMARCO, HOLD THE SECRET OF CREATING THE ASTRO ZOMBIES!

YOU WILL NEED 7 BILLION ROENTGENS OF ENCAPSULATED THALLIUM TO POWER EACH CYBER BRAIN....

IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CREATE A SELF-ACCELERATING SOURCE FOR THE NEEDED NUMBER OF T.V.M's...
("What are T.V.M.'s?")
TRI-VITATROPIC-MECHANO UNITS, OF COURSE! THERE WILL BE NO LIFE FORCE WITHOUT THIS ACCELERATION!

Sure, TVM is Ted V. Mikels...but my explanation, which is just bull made-up, is Tri-Vitatopic-Mechano units! As to Tura...would Demarco be able to call her names like "slattern" or "strumpet", do you think? How about She-bear? How about, "You took my body, but you gave me head!" Ha! Sorry...getting too silly now. "Want-wit slattern, man's brains are concentrated in his skull, in spite of what most women think! It is obvious your concentrations are in other parts of YOUR body!" ........or maybe: "Obviously your years of dyes and cosmetics have seeped into your skull and mummified your brain, woman! There is nothing you can do to harm Septimus Demarco!" (and then she pitches him out the window)....Well, I'll come up with something! Robert

July 13, 2001 (Friday the 13th!!) Rough draft for a Horror-Wood Article and the latest view of John Carradine's head!

John Carradine to “star” in Ted V. Mikels’ Mark of the Astro-Zombies

How can a dead man star in a movie? Didn’t Edward D. Wood Jr. try this with Bela Lugosi in Plan 9 From Outer Space? Ted V. Mikels was the Lighting Director for Orgy of the Dead. Did some of Ed rub off on Ted?  I doubt it, but Horror-Wood readers can e-mail their opinions to me at harrythomaswebpage@yahoo.com I am here to tell you about Mark of the Astro-Zombies.

MOTAZ will star Tura Satana (from Astro-Zombies), Brinke Stevens, Nina, Shanti, Liz Renay, Robert Southerland, Gene Paul Jones, Sean Morelli, Chuck Allford, Ted V. Mikels, John Carradine (keep reading for more information) and many more! Ted will begin filming around August 20, 2001 through the end of September (with a few pick up shots later if needed). Ted and Shanti plan to have a preview trailer available when they attend Chiller in October.

<<< Insert all or part of the story synopsis here from www.tedvmikels.com>>>

The scene with John Carradine is still being written, but here is the story. After being shot by Tura Satana, the head of John Carradine has been kept alive with the aid of an electronic collar, speakers and wires. Jay Gowey, creator of the new Astro-Zombie mask, machetes, etc., suggested that the head of John Carradine be in a giant pickle jar in the home of Tura Satana... sort of a grisly souvenir. I suggested the idea to Ted and he loved it! Ted originally wanted to wrap a photo of J. C. around a balloon and stick it in a jar. I felt that would look too cheap so I offered to buy a Carradine life mask on the condition that I get to keep the finished prop when the movie is completed. Ted agreed, I bought the life mask, and Jay is working on it now. Due to the weight, the mask will not sink in a jar of fluid so Jay suggested an electronic collar with flashing lights allowing John Carradine to "speak". Ted will be seated in his office, taking notes from John Carradine on how to make an Astro-Zombie. Tura Satana will break in and shoot Ted V. Mikels (her idea for this part of the scene). Horror-Wood writer Robert Taylor has been offered the chance to do the voice of John Carradine. I hope that Tura and John will have some kind of an argument.

He has a fantastic selection of autographed photos, video tapes, DVD’s, movie posters, lobby cards, original scripts, movie props, pressbooks, heralds, programs and much more! Please stop by www.tedvmikels.com and purchase some cool collectibles. Ted accepts checks, money orders, and credit cards through PAYPAL.

July 12, 2001. This was a face cast of Carradine extended into a full head. I Added ears etc. It photographs well and this hasn't been detailed yet! Thought you would enjoy the picture. Thanks to Dennis for buying the face cast (He will have one great collectable for his investment). I have a box of gizmos to decorate the electronic "stasis collar" in which the living can communicate with the dead!
Best,
Jay

                                                                        jc1.jpg (6645 bytes)

Dennis' note: Originally Jay suggested just having the head of John Carradine in a giant pickle jar. The head will be difficult to sink so he suggested having the head talk with the aid of an electronic collar. My friend Robert Taylor does a great John Carradine impression. We will have to think up some cool dialog like "What are you doing? That is not the proper way to make an Astro-Man....."

July 2, 2001: Here is a peek at one of three custom machetes The Astros are nearly all painted very slow going, I go down the line with each color then add the next. Tomorrow is when I will attach all the Velcro closures and masking to
block the eye slits.

The Mark of the Astro-Zombies will star: Tura Satana, Brinke Stevens, Liz Renay, Shanti, Nina Tepes, Robert Southerland, Gene Paul Jones, Sean Morelli, Chuck Allford and many more!

June 6, 2001. MARK OF THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES synopsis by Ted V. Mikels. Copyright 2001 Ted V. Mikels.

Strange alien fingers are operating on humans, placing chips into their brains, and replacing organs with synthetic replacements. In a fenced-in courtyard, ten to twelve strange looking beings with miss-shaped heads are milling about. On the orders pressed into what the face of what looks like a palm pilot by alien fingers, the strange creatures snap to a state of alert. A SECOND SIGNAL sends these beings into a frenzy. Escaping the compound and wildly swinging sharp machetes in the air, they take to the streets, indiscriminately slashing and killing all that are in sight. They are receiving orders through cyber-space, orders sent like e-mail into the receiver-chips implanted in their brains. These are THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES.

Police are helpless to defend or protect the citizens on the street, for when they fire bullets into the ASTRO-ZOMBIES, they bleed a green ooze, but continue killing, as they are unstoppable.

In the offices of the FBI, Jeff Lancaster, an agent, sees on the TV screen the pandemonium that is taking place. Jeff quickly calls his friend Cindy Natale, and tells her this would be the type of material that would propel an investigative reporter to recognition. Cindy is on her way out of her newspaper office with a TV crew to cover the attacks as Jeff's call comes in.

In the alien's operating room, four aliens are implanting body parts and brain chips into more human subjects. Actual human organs are discarded, as the process continues. Solar energy cells implanted in the foreheads of the astro-zombies drive their synthetic heart-pumps, and other implanted organs. Green ooze is pumped into their veins and arteries.

People in alleys, sidewalks and city streets, apartments and garages become the victims of the terrorizing ASTRO-ZOMBIES. Pandemonium reigns.

Cindy and her TV crew are attempting to interview witnesses to the grisly scenes, all are hysterical.

In the offices of the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, Ward Pennwood is appointing a staff to call together the brilliant scholars in several related sciences to attempt to learn what is happening. General Kingston, Garth Woodard, Tomas Peripoulos, Jessica Newhall are under orders to form a team of specialists.

Jeff catches up with Cindy and the two discuss what might be happening. Cindy is sure that her boyfriend Jeff, with access to FBI and CIA information, knows more than he is willing to discuss with her.

General Kingston is unaware that while he is calling together his group of brilliant doctors and scientists, alien beings are noting the communications, becoming aware of where and to whom Kingston is taking to. The aliens prepare the laser-projected MARK OF THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES, documenting the whereabouts of those who have been contacted.

Dr. Randolph West, a specialist in interplanetary communications tells Kingston he has a plan. Remote viewing might be brought into the search for answers.

In another setting, an evil, ambitious and satanic woman, MALVIRA, is perusing newspaper headlines. She tells her accomplice, ZOKAR, that these events are somewhat similar to what took place another time. She has a plan to capitalize on these events, and orders Zokar to gather the names of major foreign emissaries from the consulates of record.

In the President's office, Ward Pennwood is discussing with his staff the possibility of calling in the military. General Kingston feels it is too soon; Garth and Tomas lay out a plan to map out the basic area where the attacks are occurring. Ward and Kingston fear the possibility of public panic.

Dr. Randolph West enters a classroom where Dr. Owens is concluding a remote-viewing seminar. Her closing comments are that the military is investigating the use of this ability by some to zero in on an enemy's activities. Dr. West and Dr. Owens take part in a remote viewing session, and Dr. Owens visualizes aliens at an operating table, as it is actually taking place.

In a pathology room where Dr. Neidermeyer, Dr. Grashoff and Dr. Sweikert discuss the existence of alien life forms, they come to the conclusion that aliens from planets and asteroids ten to sixteen billion years older than our planet earth, have knowledge and intelligence beyond our abilities to conceptualize. This could be the reason that bodies of victims of the attacks have had certain organs and entrails removed, and in particular, brains. Someone or something is tampering with our physiogamies.

In an office of NASA, Jonathan Rossmore is discussing with Jeff and Cindy the pre-requisites of interplanetary space flight by earth's humans. Even if cryogenics were utilized, there would be no assurances of perfect functionality of these awakened space-travelers. It almost would require some form of humanoid as yet unknown to undertake this type of space-travel. As of yet, this technology is not available.

In the Control Alien's operating room, a green 'ooze' is transfused into ASTRO-ZOMBIE bodies. The aliens will send the A-Z's to intercept and capture General Kingston's team members by tagging them with a laser mark, "THE MARK OF THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES". The A-Z's zero in on these people through orders from ZEKITH and bring them into the operating rooms of the control aliens.

Malvira and Zokar have devised a plan to extort millions of dollars from foreign agents who have gathered to witness their staged control of an Astro-Zombie. Malvira orders Zokar to slash a tied up victim to death, then shoot another on her orders. She then turns the gun on the fake A-Z Zokar and green ooze squirts out of the bullet-holes. Zokar is ordered to shoot the agents but stops short when Malvira starts the bidding for the knowledge to control the A-Z's.

In the fenced-in courtyard, control aliens inspect Astro-Zombies that have various chips implanted. One is growing an animal arm after a machete removed his arm; another has grown a second head. The aliens seem to be able to grow anything they wish with their chip implants.

More team members are contacted by General Kingston and are promptly marked by the aliens with the laser mark, and are dragged off by Astro-Zombies.

Malvira, not content with her gains, calls the newspaper and convinces Cindy that she has new information on the A-Z's, and arranges to meet her. Zokar and Malvira kidnap Cindy, and force her to lure Jeff to their meeting place.

In an unusual room of Space intelligences, two good aliens the need to reach humans and convince them that not all aliens are bad. One of these is ASTP-73.

In the operating room of the control aliens, the various team members are laid out on slabs. They are held immobile in a trance. Their brains are hooked up to computers that are extracting the knowledge they possess.

In the White House offices of the president, he and his staff are informed that there is a strange communication from beings that request to speak with the president. The good aliens identify themselves. They are from an asteroid in space and offer to help destroy the evil aliens.

In Malvira's demonstration room, Jeff and Cindy are helplessly strapped in chairs where the previous victims were killed. Zokar is again posing as a controlled Astro-Zombie, ready to do Malvira's bidding.

The evil control aliens release more A-Z's from the compound as they are ordered now to search out and kill certain victims.

In the control room of the good aliens, ASTP-73 and an assistant zero in on the cyber-space commands being sent to the A-Z's by the evil aliens. ASTP-73 and the assistant appear in the control room of Zekith and an electronic battle ensues, not unlike a video-game battle.

In Malvira's demo room, one of the person's there is an FBI agent who recognizes Jeff. As Malvira and Zokar try to shoot their way out of the trap, they are shot, and Jeff and Cindy are freed as the foreign agents race out of the room in a panic.

In Zekith's control room, ASTP-73 and his assistant, who then trigger impulses that explode the heads of Zekith and the other aliens, win the electronic battle. Strange goop flies in every direction and splatters the walls. Astro-Zombies everywhere drop dead in their tracks. Their would-be victims, frozen in terror, are greatly relieved.

ASTP-73 sends signals to the captured intelligent ones that bring them out of their trance and back to reality.

In the President's office, ASTP-73 tells the president that Zekith and the evil aliens are destroyed, however they must be ever alert to prevent anything like this from happening again.

In a fancy restaurant, Jeff and Cindy toast their escape from Malvira and the evil aliens, suggesting to each other that they have really learned something from their experience.

In a neighborhood alley, a young boy picks up an ASTRO-ZOMBIE mask and machete and chases two young girls up a street, screaming in panic.

END ON A CLOSE-UP of the BOY IN THE MASK, HIS ARM FROZEN IN THE AIR, HOLDING THE MACHETE, THE FRIGHTENED GIRLS' SCREAMS HEARD OVER THE STILL SHOT.

June 6, 2001: Here it is ready for molding! The eye slots are hidden directly beneath the
lenses. The mouth will be cut out and the actors will wear a black hood to
hide their mouths. There will be Velcro to close the masks back opening. The
latex will be tinted to avoid paint scuffs or damage shadowed like the
original Astros and the eyes painted in a high gloss black. Ears will also
have the wires as the originals did.
I hope Ted approves of it and I can get started.
Thanks
Jay

May 27, 2001: Here it is folks! This is the new style Astro-Zombie plus comments from the sculptor:
Attached is a picture of the first mask design. I thought an exposed brain might be a nice new touch, plus he's basically a more menacing version of the original mask. He came out a little chubby in this sculpt, I'd make him more tall and long faced than he appears here. This design is from Michael Hagan.
